For the last week I have done my best to keep out of posting anything about Ferguson, MO. My focus is on entertainment, not on news. But there is something in all this aftermath that needs to be said.
I see so so so so so many people with such hostility towards the police. Comments on stories, tweets, and Facebook postings all with the same mentality “I hate cops”.Funny thing is that in my personal network of acquaintances (AKA people I am friends with on Facebook, but stopped hanging out with in real life) I can lump police haters into a few categories…
1 – People who decided to break the law and blame the cops for their arrest
2 – People who want to be police officers but for various reasons can not get hired
3 – People with friends/family in the above categories who believe what they are told
Let me illustrate with some personal examples
Hates the police due to being arrested
My cousin was arrested for DUI a few years back. The officer turned on his lights but my cousin failed to pull over. Less than a mile later my cousin pulled into his driveway at home and the officer made contact there in the driveway. Eventually the arrest was made and my cousin’s BAC level was .17, over twice the legal limit.
To this day he is mad that he was arrested. He says “obviously I was safe to drive as I made it home”. He also says all cops used trickery in the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing because no one can pass SFST when sober. Meaning tricks made him look drunk on the dash camera when he was good to go.
Wannabe Cops who can’t get jobs
My old college roommate was caught cheating on a major class paper. He was given an opportunity to be honest but lied about his plagiarism. So the instructor (an off duty cop working as an adjunct instructor) reported him to the Criminal Justice program Dean and he was kicked out of the program.
He still tried to get hired as a police officer but never made it. He now works for a private security company doing guard duty at an industrial site. To this day he says that cops are too harsh and never cut breaks to people who make “silly mistakes” that “everyone does”.
Family/Friends of the above two
My neighbor is dating a disgraced ex-cop. He boyfriend got caught up is some issues and was even convicted of perjury. He did time in jail for his perjury. So he had to be fired no questions asked.
She hates all cops because his brothers did not stick up for him. He says that could have avoided jail if some of us would have just kept our mouths shut.
Seriously she hates all police because of us honest cops! Let that one sink in a second…
My challenge to you
Before you say “I hate the police” please stop for a second and think. Why do you hate cops?
If you don’t have a good reason… take a second to remember that if you dial 911 asking for help, we the cops WILL come help… so maybe some of that hatred could be let go of…
If you don’t know any police officer, try to. Talk with one. I bet you will be surprised to learn we are nice humans who are trying to make a better quality of life for the honest citizens of our cities.
