For the last few days I had the honor, or is it the horror, of sitting though applicant interviews. We had many good people come in to interview. But some answers to questions that made many of us shake our heads.
Below I have outlined a few choice answers that stood out. These are not all from the same applicant. These are all culled from a nice cross section of the interviews we got subjected to.
While these are all for a police interview. I am sure questions like these also get asked at interviews for Fire and EMS…
In what ways have you prepared for a police career?
Answer 1 – I filled out the application. Oh and I was here early today for this interview, promptness is important.
Answer 2 – Most cops don’t have any education so I went to college and got a CJ degree. I know about people like Robert Peel so I am less likely to do stupid things like the guys in New York.
Answer 3 – My dad is a cop in Madison so I went on a ride-a-long with him a few times. Being a legacy I am a shoo-in just like joining my fraternity in college.
Explain a time you had a conflict and how you resolved it
Answer 1 – Everyone likes me. I don’t get into conflict with people. If I find that someone does not agree with me I avoid them like the plague so I never have to worry about getting into fights.
Answer 2 – I caught my roommate sleeping with my now ex-girlfriend. I dumped her. Then after I beat him up I told him I was going home for the weekend and when I got back he needed to be moved out. My name was on the lease not his so I was keeping the apartment.
Answer 3 – I work at Denny’s and our cooks mess up orders all the time. To keep people happy I always get them new food. If they are real mad I might add some free extra bacon to their plate because bacon makes everyone happy.
Tell us about a time you witnessed someone do something unethical. How did you react?
Answer 1 – I worked at a bar and saw this other bar tender forget to ring up drink orders so and then put the money in his pocket. Somewhere close to one in five drinks he failed to type into the cash register. I told him I saw what he did and he was lucky it was me working with him and not the owner. If the owner knew the owner would have fired him.
Answer 2 – I can’t think of seeing anyone else do unethical things, but I can tell you something I do. I often times have to work on Friday and it seems like I miss out on all the fun going out with friend because I am working. So I call in sick, but you know I am not sick, just so I can go party. Keep in mind that is only a part time job so it does not count, when you hire me I will only call in if I am like pukeing or something.
Why do you want to be a police officer?
Answer 1 – Because the Marine Corps kicked me out so I figured cops get paid to use guns, I should apply for that.
Answer 2 – In high school I took this test to see what job I should have. It said cop so I guess I want to do something I am good at.
In the end we did have some very good interviews. As a matter of fact we had more than enough people to move on to the next phase of our hiring process. With luck in a few months a couple of them will be putting on fresh new uniforms…
