The Shadow Boys is an interesting book, it was a good read but one that has a number of technical flaws. Even with the flaws it was a fun read that I recommend for someone looking for a mystery that will keep you turning the pages to find out who did it.
The story has a number of moving part that all wrap around each other. The main plot is about Jon Cantrell, a former LEO, who know works private investigations for a law firm. Much of his investigations seems to be more on the line of repo of high dollar equipment from businesses. Jon though gets tasked to find a missing boy how hails from a gang neighborhood in Dallas.
At the same time this is going on Dallas is being hit by a vigilante killer. The killer is taking out gang leadership in some of the nasty neighborhoods. The assumption is someone the missing kid witnessed the vigilante and became one of the victims.
A deputy chief from the Dallas police department is trying to help Cantrell in his investigation but this deputy chief also puts up some road blocks. He also happens to be dating Cantrell’s ex-girlfirned, who he still is friends with benefits.
During the whole book the author does an amazing job of giving hits about where the missing kids is and who the vigilante is. Right up until the case(s) are solved I was not sure if I had it all figured out.
But for a cop reading this book about cops there are some glaring errors. Descriptions of firearms and use of firearms seemed off. Also an issue with Deputy Chief dating a female who is a officer at his PD directly in his chain of command. Also in one scene the author talks about FBI agents fast roping off Apache Gun Ships, the Apache is not a troop carrying air frame, and I don’t think the FBI has any.
These errors overall were minor. Lets face it fiction does not have to be 100% real. To tell a story some artistic freedoms can and do come into play.
In the end when the next mystery about Jon Cantrell comes out I plan to read it. Until then I hope you check out Shadow Boys is an interesting book, it was a good read but one that has a number of technical flaws.
